Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations begins an official visit to Egypt


The Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, Ambassador Ip Petersen, began an official visit to Egypt today, Sunday, June 13, 2021. According to a statement by the United Nations Population Fund


During his 5-day visit, Petersen will be briefed on the nature of the programs and projects that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is implementing in partnership with the Egyptian government and discuss how the United Nations Population Fund can provide more support to the Egyptian government and other partners to achieve its 2030 development agenda. Petersen has several meetings with various ministers, chairmen of national councils, civil society, and religious leaders.


According to the United Nations, the visit of the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations comes at a very important time, as the Egyptian government has embarked on implementing an ambitious and expedited national action plan for the development of the Egyptian family, led by the Ministry of Planning and Development. Petersen will discuss the multi-sectoral program with women's empowerment at its core with a number of relevant ministers.


The Deputy Executive Director of UNFPA and the UNFPA regional and country officials will discuss with Egyptian partners UNFPA support to implement this action plan. Petersen encourages more attention to young men and women in other programs, such as the presidential initiative "Life Is Dignified" and others.


During his visit, Petersen will also hold meetings with officials from the League of Arab States to discuss the work of UNFPA at the regional level and the long-term cooperation that exists between the Fund and the League of Arab States.
