Moscow: Sanctions against Syria aim to overthrow the legitimate authorities in the country

Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, announced that Western sanctions against Syria worsen the humanitarian situation in the country, and appear to be aimed at overthrowing the legitimate authorities in the country.

"The social, economic and humanitarian situation in the country has deteriorated, above all, due to illegal economic restrictions by the West, which were imposed without the permission of the UN Security Council and despite the fact that the situation in the country has deteriorated," Nebenzia said during a session of the UN Security Council. From the UN Secretary-General's call to ease the pressure of sanctions at the height of the pandemic."

He continued, "We see in this a continuation of the quest to overthrow the legitimate authorities in Syria by tightening the screws on them economically."

Nebenzia pointed out that "60 percent of the Syrians are facing the threat of real starvation," adding that despite the stability of the military and political situation in general, the situation in Syria is still tense.
